Electric vs hybrid cars: a practical guide for Kenya

Start with your routine, not the badge. The right powertrain depends on where you park, how you recharge and the journeys you actually make.

Three types, one important distinction

A battery electric vehicle (BEV) drives using energy stored in a rechargeable battery. A conventional hybrid (HEV) combines an engine with an electric motor but is not plugged in. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) also has an engine, with a battery you can charge externally for electric driving. Those distinctions are set out in the U.S. Department of Energy’s EV overview.

“Hybrid” on its own is not enough information for a buying decision. Ask for the exact variant and whether its quoted range is electric-only or a combined battery-and-fuel figure. A PHEV’s combined figure is not its distance on one battery charge.

Build a one-week driving picture

Write down a normal week: the commute, school runs, shopping, late finishes and the longest regular return journey. Then note where the car stands for several hours. A Nairobi commuter with an allocated parking bay has a different charging problem from an apartment resident whose parking changes every night.

For each candidate, ask yourself: can I replenish the energy I use without adding an inconvenient trip? If workplace charging is your plan, confirm that you are allowed to use it, its hours and what happens if the bay is occupied. Treat a charger you have not checked as an option, not a guaranteed service.

When each option is worth considering

Consider an EV when you have a workable charging plan and can identify suitable stops for longer trips. Start by comparing the car’s practical range with your routine; the biggest battery is not automatically the most useful purchase.

Consider a PHEV if you intend to plug in regularly but also want an engine for some journeys. Ask for both electric-mode consumption and fuel consumption when the battery’s electric-driving allowance has been used. Evaluate how you will use the car, rather than assuming every kilometre will be electric.

Consider a conventional hybrid when external charging does not fit your circumstances. It still needs fuel, so compare its fuel use and service requirements with other cars you are considering. There is no single best powertrain for every driver.

Compare ownership, not just the purchase price

Use one worksheet for each car: purchase and import quote, charging equipment if needed, energy or fuel, insurance, tyres, maintenance and support. Use a written quotation that says what is included and where the vehicle will be handed over. Do not compare an overseas purchase price with a landed client quote.

Electric cars generally have fewer routine maintenance items than engine-equipped cars; hybrids and PHEVs still have an engine to service. That does not make an EV maintenance-free. Check the model’s schedule and local support arrangements, as the Department of Energy’s maintenance guide recommends.

Your next step

Shortlist two or three cars and send the seller the same questions: exact variant, battery size, AC and DC charging capability, connector photos, warranty terms and total quotation. Comparable answers are more useful than a list of headline features.
