For boda boda or delivery work, compare the cost of completing your usual shift. How far do you ride, what do you spend on energy, and how much of the day is available for paid work?

Keep a week’s records of kilometres, fuel spending, paid trips, hours on the road and repairs. Use them to compare an electric bike on the same work.

Electric motorcycle prices in SafiVolt’s catalogue

Those prices include the motorcycle, international shipping, clearing and tax to Nairobi. Check whether registration, insurance, charging equipment and a spare battery are included in the written offer. The bikes are sourced for import, so ask about availability and your delivery schedule.

The EV60S costs KSh 24,000 more at these guide prices. Compare the motor, chassis and battery for your route before choosing. Assess peak motor power, advertised range and purchase price separately.

A daily electricity versus petrol calculation

This example uses 150 km a day, 3.5 kWh of battery energy per 100 km and 90% charging efficiency for the electric bike, at an all-in rate of KSh 25/kWh. The petrol bike uses an assumed 40 km per litre, with petrol at KSh 200 per litre.

These are assumed inputs. The energy use is not a measured DIHAO result, and the rates are not current electricity or pump-price quotations.

Daily energy costKSh 146KSh 750
Energy cost per kmKSh 0.97KSh 5.00
Energy cost over 26 working daysKSh 3,792KSh 19,500

Under those assumptions, the monthly energy difference is approximately KSh 15,708. A rider who pays by battery swap should replace the electricity calculation with the actual swap charges, any subscription and the distance obtained from those batteries.

Electric cost per km = billed kWh for the shift × all-in rate ÷ kilometres completed.

Use a meter or a charging invoice to check the billed energy. A nominal battery label such as 60 Ah does not, by itself, state usable kWh. The supplier should specify the pack’s nominal voltage, energy capacity and the permitted operating limits.

Include a battery reserve in your budget

If you own the battery, set money aside for eventual repair or replacement. Ask for the current replacement price, warranty terms and expected life under commercial use. Keep the warranty period separate from the expected working life on your route.

For illustration, a KSh 40,000 replacement budget spread over an assumed 40,000 km equals KSh 1 per kilometre. At 150 km a day, that reserve is KSh 150. The replacement cost and distance are assumptions, not a DIHAO battery quotation or lifespan claim.

With that reserve, the example electric bike costs about KSh 296 a day, against KSh 750 for petrol energy. The KSh 454 difference still has to cover any extra finance, service, repairs or downtime. Include future repair provisions in the petrol budget too.

Arrange charging before starting work

Check where you will charge, how long the supplied charger needs and whether the electrical supply is suitable. In a delivery fleet, schedule charging around departures and returns. Plan for a charger fault or a power interruption.

A removable battery can help you manage charging or keep a compatible spare. For a public swapping network, get written confirmation that it supports your bike and battery. Also check the approved charger and swap arrangement.

For an installed charging or battery-swapping site, use appropriate professional design and installation. EPRA’s infrastructure guidelines address private and public sites in Kenya.

Test range with the load you normally carry

SafiVolt’s EV60S listing describes its maximum range under a stated condition: a solo 75 kg rider travelling at 35 km/h in E gear. A passenger, deliveries, higher speed or hills change the operating conditions. Use the range claim as a specification to examine, then test the bike on the intended work.

Test the bike on your normal work and the busiest shift. Record whether it completes the route, the charger energy used, charging time and the charge left at the end of the day. Allow enough reserve for a diversion, and check the approved passenger or cargo configuration and registration requirements.

Financing and maintenance affect cash left after a shift

For a lender’s offer, add the deposit, every instalment, fees, insurance and final payment. Check whether the battery belongs to you, whether there is a separate subscription and whether you must use a particular energy network. Spread the payments over the days you expect to work, allowing for servicing downtime.

Electric vehicles have fewer engine-related maintenance items, but tyres, brakes, bearings, suspension and other working parts still need attention. The Department of Energy’s EV maintenance guide explains the general drivetrain difference. Use the motorcycle manufacturer’s schedule for the actual bike and ask which parts are supported locally.

For a simple payback estimate, divide the extra purchase cost by the daily saving after additional recurring expenses. Then compare ownership costs over the period you expect to keep the bike, including finance, downtime, repairs and resale.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Questions riders ask before switching

Is an electric boda boda cheaper to run?

It can be, especially where daily distance is high and charging is reliable. Compare measured energy or swap payments, battery provision, finance, maintenance and completed paid work on the same route.

Can I use any battery-swapping station?

Use the network or spare-battery arrangement approved for the bike. Confirm compatibility and commercial terms before assuming a third-party station will accept the battery.

How much money will I save each day?

Calculate it from your records. The KSh 604 energy difference in this article follows the stated example inputs. It is not a guaranteed saving for either DIHAO model or every rider.
